Name: Kirby
Fandom: The Kirby Series
Timeline: Following Kirby's Return to Dream Land
Age: Unknown; presumed to be young.
Appearance:
“First you draw a circle, then you dot the eyes, add a great big smile, and presto, it's Kirby!”
Kirby is what happens when you take the cutest features and remove everything else. Hence, he has maximum pink.
He stands at an imposing eight inches tall, making him roughly the same size as a football. Since he is also spherical, he is also the same shape as one. With bright blue eyes (that occasionally in the place of ordinary shine have little stars), little blushes and stubby little arms, Kirby tops off his adorable look with only the cutest of booties, a shade darker than the rest of him.
Look at the icon. He fits in entirely.
The official Nintendo profile for Kirby describes the sensation of touching him as 'punipuni', a mimetic word that means squishy- but is often used to refer specifically to the soft paws of a baby animal. In other words, he feels something like a kitten's toe beans.
Abilities:
Don't be fooled by his size, you won't believe your eyes!
Despite Kirby's ridiculously cute appearance, he's packing some serious muscle. With his bare hands (stumps whatever) he can throw punches in the megaton range (to a maximum of 201 megatons) and is capable of splitting his home planet in two in one blow. He doesn't have any trouble dragging around similarly strong characters, such as King DeDeDe. He can also take a lot of abuse, including crash landing on planets from space and being blasted with giant lasers, causing him to crash land so hard dirt is thrown up above a mountain. He literally just gets up and carries on from those. He is squishy and stretchy, able to mildly distort his body with ease. By inflating himself, he can flap his little arms to fly at about the same speed he runs. Releasing the trapped air, he can shoot an air bullet strong enough to kill some weaker enemies in one go. He's got some ridiculous stamina too, able to happily run all over a planet in one day. Whilst fighting pretty much everything he meets. To top it all of, he can heal himself simply by eating.
Speaking of eating, on to Kirby's signature ability: Inhalation. Kirby's body is, in fact, a bottomless pit and he is potentially the container for an entirely other dimension. Objects of any size or shape can be sucked right up, despite his tiny size. He can perform a normal inhalation indefinitely or perform a Super Inhalation necessary for sucking up more numerous or powerful objects for a short time. Size doesn't matter, but more powerful opponents may have the strength to resist the suction.
It's what happens when Kirby has the unfortunate foe in his mouth that is truly interesting though. Should Kirby swallow, two things can occur. If without sufficient abilities the victim will be destroyed, erased from the universe. On the other hand, if the opponent has a special quality Kirby can temporarily gain their abilities, something appropriately termed Copy Abilities. When he does this, Kirby gains a little hat signifying the ability and can then freely make use of it. At any time he can discard the ability unless it somehow prevents it itself-such as the ability 'Sleep' which merely renders Kirby unconscious. Alternatively, Kirby can spit the object out and if he so chooses to transform it into a star-shaped projectile, called a Star Shot. Kirby can perform any of the above with objects just as much as beings (for example, eating a swordsman and eating a sword itself would both grant Kirby sword abilities). In some cases, Kirby just needs to pick an item up to gain the abilities e.g. picking up a hammer will transform him into Hammer Kirby.
Some intricacies of the Copy Ability system are as follows:
-If Kirby inhales one being or item that would grant a copy ability and any number of beings or items that would not, swallowing will grant him the ability.
-If Kirby inhales two beings or items that can grant him abilities, even if they are the same type, Kirby will either enter into a roulette (which will stop on its own with reliable results or he can stop to try and gain a specific ability) or he will combine the two (such as combining Stone and Fire to make a volcanic ability).
-The more objects Kirby inhales, the larger and more powerful his Star Shot will be.
-No matter the number of objects, once inside Kirby's mouth he can swallow them all.
-Once Kirby discards an ability or is hit hard enough to lose it, it forms a star that bounces around. Kirby can inhale that to regain the ability or use it as a Star Shot. If this star is inhaled along with another object that would give an ability, the bouncing star's ability will always be used.
-If sealed in a protective bubble, items and powers can be stored safely in Kirby's belly. They can be mixed together in there too.
Kirby doesn't just keep all these abilities to himself though. If Kirby rides another living being (ride being a very loose term including sitting inside their mouth, being rolled around by them, having them sit on his head or carrying them in his hands) he can share his Copy Ability with them. Doing so generally alters it to better fit their style and form. For example, if Kirby has the Cutter ability which allows him to throw bladed boomerangs and rides Rick, a giant hamster, Rick will be able to throw Kirby in the shape of a Boomerang. But if Kirby then rode Coo, a giant owl, Coo would gain the ability to throw his feathers as multi-direction boomerangs.
In relation to this, Kirby can sacrifice his current ability in order to create a Helper. As befits the name, these are essentially friendly versions of whatever Kirby swallowed to get the ability, who happily fight to the death for Kirby. They cannot get too far away from him, and if they do they teleport to his side. His Helpers are generally vastly more powerful than their generic counterparts and sport different colours to differentiate them. Kirby can transform his Helpers into items relevant to their ability using a technique called the Normal Beam, so he can reclaim the sacrificed power at will. Similarly, if he attempts to create a Helper when one already exists, Kirby just creates the relevant item instead. If the Helper comes into contact with that, they transform into a new Helper to fit the item. If a Helper is dying, they gain the ability to temporarily absorb a new ability by touching it, allow them to reincarnate themselves in another form without Kirby's interference. If a new Helper is made (including using Normal Beam and then recreating the same one), they are in tip-top condition.
Kirby can survive in almost any environment, including the vacuum of space, inside volcanoes, frozen wastelands, desserts and deep underwater.
This is useful because Kirby can summon/create items called Warp Stars. Five-pointed stars that Kirby can ride. They are massively faster than light, able to cross the Gamble Galaxy in very short order. Whilst they can comfortably carry up to four riders, that seems to be about the limit-notably, when carrying ten Kirbys, it was too wobbly to use properly. If three Warp Stars are combined, they can become the Star Ship, a faster mode of transport that can fire star-shaped energy blasts. The Star Ship can break down into a rainbow coloured road with gravity to provide a platform in space.
Kirby's heart is so pure and heroic that it has a power all of its own. It is possibly this that makes him immune to corrupting evil forces such as Dark Matter. When his body is in danger, Kirby's heart (which takes the form of a shining star) can fly freely and offer advice and guide him. Perhaps related to this, when someone expresses deep feelings of gratitude and affection towards Kirby, those feelings can take the form of Heart Stars: Small samples of the power of love and friendship. These can be used to purify evil influences and if thirty are gathered, they can be used to form a powerful weapon called the Love Love Stick, a rod that uses the power of love to beat the shit out of things.
Lastly, Kirby is very talented at picking up new skill sets very quickly. In addition to learning to use weapons just after picking them up, he is a pro level golfer (admittedly from the unique perspective of the ball), exceptionally good at a block stacking game called Avalanche, capable of building and piloting vehicles just from seeing the blueprints and is an expert chef. Notably, he is an extremely good swordsman.
For all his great power, Kirby's small size and almost non-existent weight make him easy to throw, knock away or be blown away by powerful winds or blasts, especially when he cannot plant his feet. Often he is defeated by a foe that just wants him gone rather than to beat him using such methods.
Personality:
Kirby is just as sweet and kind as he looks. In other words, he is extremely sweet and kind. With a bright and cheerful personality that always looks on the brighter side of things, he almost the perfect embodiment of the idyllic and cheerful lifestyle that is favoured by the people of Dream Land. In fact, Kirby is so selflessly devoted to helping others he can't think of reasons not to fulfil people's requests and generally be nice to everyone. If there is ever anyone who is down for any reason, Kirby will go out of his way to assist them and raise their spirits, even in the direst of circumstances. No problem is too large or small.
In fact, Kirby's desire to help others is probably his greatest weakness. He is easily deceived by those with less pure intentions, fulfilling requests without realising he is being fooled. He rarely thinks about people's motivations and tends to assume everyone is a nice person.
Although Kirby is as good as good can be, he is far from soft. Whilst he doesn't much concern himself with justice, he will protect those that need him with a true warrior's approach. He has zero issue with straight up slaughtering the minions of his opponents, and when faced with beings of true evil he will kill them without hesitation. In fact, once he gets on a roll Kirby can be brutal, but never unnecessarily so. For example, even though he is a repeated nuisance to Dream Land, Kirby limits his response to King DeDeDe's mischief to smacking him around and occasionally booting him into space. But when he encounters such cosmic dangers as Nightmare or Dark Matter, Kirby does his best to eliminate them entirely. Anyone who expects mercy from Kirby will be sorely surprised when he kicks their teeth in.
But when not involved in some chaotic escapade, Kirby is a fun loving and easy going little fellow who is more likely to be found amusing himself with pleasant activities such as fishing, painting, napping or other such things. He is generally more talkative in circumstances like this and has a talent for (dreadful) wordplay. His friendly nature allows him to get along with anyone who isn't actively causing trouble for him or others. When he is taking care of serious business, he becomes far quieter and intent on his mission. When a crisis comes up, his courage overtakes his love of peace and he hops to it.
Hops to it a little too firmly it should be noted. He tends to leap to conclusions and become quite single-minded sometimes. He attacked King DeDeDe when his cake was stolen because King DeDeDe seemed a likely culprit, then proceeded to wage war against an enormous criminal organization because they had a taken his slice of cake. He also has a habit of not listening to people and communicates poorly with others sometimes, leading to him getting the wrong end of the stick.
Related to the whole cake thing, Kirby has an appetite. No, he has an Appetite. An Appetite. AN APPETITE. He is both a gourmet and a glutton, happy to eat anything and everything there is. If it's food (and even if it's not) he'll gobble it up without hesitation. By far his favourite pastime is eating.
Kirby has a little bit of a competitive streak, but it's all in good fun. He can't resist a challenge to a game, even from his foes. This is probably because the little guy doesn't hold a grudge. Even opponents he's fought several times he's happy to team up with once they stop being threats to peace.
History:
As a note, the chronology of some of these events is questionable due to remakes and the general unimportance of the order of most events. I am using the remakes as the canonical versions, but in most cases, it doesn't really matter what came before or after what. I am also using the versions in Extra Modes, as these usually contain plot developments not present in normal gameplay.
Where Kirby comes from, what he is and even his age is unknown. All that is known is that he lives on the planet Pop Star, a world shaped like a five-pointed star, and is a citizen of Dream Land.
Kirby began his career in heroism when the self-proclaimed king of Dream Land, King DeDeDe stole all the citizen's food and the Sparkling Stars used to gather food in the first place. Naturally, this roused Kirby's ire and he set off to reclaim the stars from the soldiers entrusted with them. Wiping out most of DeDeDe's army in the process, Kirby defeated DeDeDe personally and used the Sparkling Stars to fly off with his castle, returning the food and stars to the citizens of Dream Land.
After a short period of peace, Dream Land's food was again put at risk when the giant bird Dyna Blade went on a rampage. Kirby once again set out to set things right, beating Dyna Blade in battle and discovering she was trying to feed her chicks. Kirby took it upon himself to feed the babies and then taught them to fly so they could find their own food.
Later on, Kirby would go exploring Dream Land and fall into a sealed cave. Taking the event in stride, he searched the cave for treasures and found a boatload (including the Triforce, the Screw Attack and Captain Falcon's helmet). Eventually, he found all the treasures and the exit, defeating a whole load of weird stuff along the way.
King DeDeDe, now apparently recovered from being kicked into the stratosphere, appeared to challenge Kirby to a gourmet race, where the pair would sprint across locations gobbling food to earn points. Kirby once again proved himself DeDeDe's superior.
The time of peace could not last however as Metaknight, Pop Star's greatest swordsman, began a plan to conquer Dream Land to end its lazy lifestyle for the citizen's own good. Using the giant battleship Halberd as a base, he began his assault only to be foiled by Kirby, who in the process was bombed, blasted out of the air, rode Dyna Blade and fought Metaknight in a sword duel. Eventually destroying the Halberd, Kirby went home satisfied.
Now with a reputation for badassery, Kirby would be for the first time tasked with protecting all of Pop Star. When the Sun and Moon began fighting, a fellow adorable pink thing called Marx approached Kirby and told him only he could save the day, by gathering power from every planet in the solar system to awaken the wish-granting clockwork star, NOVA. Kirby did so, but before he could make his wish for peace, Marx arrived and wished to rule Pop Star. Marx revealed his true hideous form as he explained he'd tricked the Sun and Moon, leaving Kirby spinning in space, where the power he had gathered formed the Star Ship so Kirby could fly into NOVA and destroy it. The Star Ship became an enormous space road for Kirby to battle Marx, who was killed when Kirby defeated him and forced him to collide with the remains of NOVA, causing a cosmic-sized explosion. Kirby returned home triumphant, the Sun and Moon having made up when they had to work together to hold back Nova.
At this point, King DeDeDe had been growing ever more irritated at Kirby and sought revenge. Stealing the Shining Stars once more to lure Kirby into fighting stronger soldiers in more dangerous areas, the two rivals eventually clashed personally in a hammer vs hammer duel. Whilst more difficult, the result was the same and Kirby once more proved he was the roughest toughest puffiest guy on Pop Star.
As time passed, Marx's corpse floated in space and somehow absorbed the power of the destroyed NOVA. Reborn as the undead Marx Soul, Kirby once more flew out into space to deal with him. Along the way, he encountered the Gamble Galaxy's greatest warrior who had been released from imprisonment by Metaknight to test his own skills. Kirby managed to beat the Galaxia Knight before doing the same to Marx, destroying his soul to prevent him from ever returning.
With Pop Star safe again, peace returned. Until Kirby noted he had stopped having dreams, a very unusual event in Dream Land. Heading off to the source of all dreams and collector of wishes on Pop Star, the Fountain of Dreams, Kirby saw King DeDeDe bathing in the waters and the source of the fountain's power, the Star Rod, missing. Presuming it some selfish scheme, he decided to fix things himself. Heading off to reclaim the parts of the Star Rod, Kirby defeated each of the guardians (including Meta Knight) and then DeDeDe. Replacing the Star Rod despite DeDeDe's pleas, a terrible creature emerged from the fountain. Kirby had accidentally released the embodiment of nightmares that DeDeDe had sought to protect the world from. Taking up the Star Rod as a weapon, Kirby defeated Nightmare and in the ensuing battle blasted most of the moon away. Now it was safe to complete the Fountain of Dreams, the puffball and the king reconciled. Kirby went back home and slept peacefully once more.
It didn't last, however. The Rainbow Bridges that connected various areas of Dream Land were mysteriously destroyed by DeDeDe. Once more Kirby leapt into action and restored the bridges by defeating unusual evil forces, gathering up items called Rainbow Drops as he went. Facing up against his rival, Kirby discovered that something was wrong. DeDeDe was possessed by an evil force called Dark Matter. Using the power of the Rainbow Drops to force it from DeDeDe's body, they then formed a Rainbow Sword and fought in the upper atmosphere. Using the Rainbow Sword to deflect its own power at it, Kirby banished Dark Matter from Pop Star.
Dark Matter wouldn't stay gone for long though. Returning as a mass so huge it spread its influence across the entire planet, Kirby was again the only one who could save the day. Fighting Dark Matter's evil forces and the affected citizens of Pop Star, along the way Kirby performed good deeds for those who retained their senses (including Metroid's Samus Aran) and was rewarded with a Heart Star from each. He used these to cleanse areas of Dark Matter's wicked influence and eventually with enough of them, he formed the Love Love Stick and set off into space to fight the core of the Dark Matter mass. There he found Zero, the possible source and master of Dark Matter and successfully killed it, saving Pop Star once again.
But it wasn't only Pop Star that was under threat from the danger of Dark Matter. Within the solar system, several other planets were at risk. One, in particular, Ripple Star, possessed a powerful crystal which attracted the attention of Dark Matter. Attempting to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands, the queen of Ripple Star sent it away with a fairy named Ribbon. Unfortunately, Ribbon was shot down in transit to Pop Star, shattering the crystal and spreading the pieces over the solar system. Kirby took it upon himself to eliminate Dark Matter from each of the infected planets, gathering crystal pieces as he went. Once it was complete and it seemed Kirby had succeeded in his mission, the crystal reacted to the queen of Ripple Star and revealed she was possessed by Dark Matter. Purging her, Dark Matter retreated into one mass once more. Heading off into the planet-sized massed, Kirby encountered 0², the undead form of Zero. Destroying it with the help of the crystal and Ribbon, Kirby was finally finished with the threat of Dark Matter.
Back in Dream Land once more, Kirby would be drawn into a new battle for peace when a parallel dimension called the Mirror World began to act strangely. The entrance to the Mirror World was a magical mirror high above Dream Land, and it would grant the wishes of those who it reflected. But when it began to only reflect evil minds, Meta Knight realised it was a threat to Dream Land and went to investigate. Kirby followed him, just in time to see Meta Knight defeated by Dark Meta Knight, the Mirror World's version of the swordsman. Sealing his alternate inside the Dimension Mirror, Dark Meta Knight broke it into shards to prevent him from being set loose to interfere. Dark Meta Knight then casually cut Kirby into four, but for some reason, this split Kirby into four separate coloured Kirbies. The four Kirbies set off to explore the maze-like Mirror World, finding the shards of the Dimension Mirror and repairing it. Along the way, he duelled Shadow Kirby, his own alternate. Once the mirror was repaired, the Kirbies entered the strange world inside and defeated Dark Meta Knight, destroying him. All is not well though; a wormhole opened, sucking the Kirbies in. The real Meta Knight, who had been watching, threw his sword in after them to offer help. Using the legendary blade, Kirby destroyed the mastermind who had conquered the Mirror World with evil: Dark Mind. He then discovers Shadow Kirby wasn't evil, merely trying to protect the Mirror World by keeping out intruders. The Kirbies all fly home.
Dream Land's peace was once more broken when a wicked witch by the name of Drawcia transformed the kingdom into a painting. When Kirby attempted to stop her, she transformed him into a limbless ball with her Power Paintbrush and left him helpless. But Kirby had managed to absorb a little of the paintbrush's power, allowing him to create rainbow paths for him to travel on. Heading out again, he entered Drawcia's painting dimension and successfully defeated her, returning her to her true form of a strange painting. Dream Land was saved.
Going back to his lazy lifestyle, Kirby planned to eat some cake when it was mysteriously stolen right off of his fork. Assuming it to be the work of King DeDeDe, who really is the sort of guy to steal someone's cake, Kirby broke into his castle and beat him up. DeDeDe had no idea what Kirby was talking about regarding his cake, but at that moment the Squeak Squad appeared. An enormous gang of mouse thieves, they began to steal all of DeDeDe's treasure. Being a total boss, the king picked up Kirby and used him as a projectile to smack the Squeak Squad (and Kirby) down a ravine. From there Kirby began to track down the leader of the Squeak Squad, Daroach, in order to get his goddamn cake back. Along the way, he prevented the Squeaks from stealing a lot of treasure and gathered a number of Star Seals. Upon defeating Daroach, Kirby planned to open the chest he believed contained his cake when Meta Knight swooped down and took it, sealing himself behind a Star Door. Kirby used the seals to open the door and chased after him, eventually reclaiming the chest. Before he could open though, Daroach took it back and opened it himself. A horrible dark energy took him and the rest of the squeaks across the galaxy and Kirby gave chase. Eventually catching the now possessed Daroach, Kirby beat him again and the energy revealed itself to be Dark Nebula, the ruler of the underworld who had been sealed away for ages. Kirby used Daroach's Triple Star, a legendary weapon, to kill Dark Nebula and flew home. A while late, the Squeaks sent him some cake to make up for the trouble they caused.
Later, Kirby was doing his thing, just going for a walk and saw a tomato with an M on it atop a bush. Being Kirby, his response was 'down the hatch' and began to suck that bad boy up. A sombrero-wearing moustachioed man made of yarn appeared from behind the bush, revealing the tomato was on his head. Kirby still ate it. And. Then. Shit. Got. Weird. The moustachioed fellow, Yin Yarn, got mad at Kirby and sucked him into the magic sock he wore around his neck. Now arriving in Patch Land, a world made from yarn, thread and other such fabrics, Kirby found himself transformed into a creature of yarn. When he saw someone being attacked by a monster, Kirby attempted to help but found he could not use his regular abilities in that form. His desire to save the little blue fellow caused Kirby to transform into a yarn car and drove him to safety. The blue guy was named Prince Fluff, the prince of Patch Land and he explained the sorcerer was a villain who had split Patch Land into pieces by stealing the magic yarn that kept it together. It also turns out the tomato Kirby ate was a Metamato which allowed him to take various forms whilst he was yarn. With Prince Fluff's help, the pink hero set out to save Patch Land by reclaiming the magic yarn. They succeed, but along the way a yarnified King DeDeDe appears, once again brainwashed to fight Kirby. Kirby beats him and finished Patch Land, only for a similarly Yarnified Meta Knight to appear and reveal Yin Yarn had conquered Dream Land. Using the matching magic sock, that worked now Patch Land was rescued, they all returned to Dream Land and Kirby destroyed Yin Yarn, restoring Dream Land to normal. Kirby was given the sock as a gift by Prince Fluff, who returned home.
Kirby didn't let his distance from his new friend get him down, and went exploring once again. This time wandering about the Popopo Islands, Kirby was taking a nap when an evil wizard demon thing named Necrodeus struck, using evil magic to split Kirby into ten identical versions, each with a fraction of Kirby's strength. Surprised and without strength, nine of the Kirbys were killed immediately. The last barely survived and raised his head when he felt strong light and heard a voice calling to him. It was his own heroic heart in the form of a star, that called to Kirby and told him that if he followed it he could still save the day. Following his heart, Kirby discovered that although he had lost all of his abilities he could restore his killed selves by eating and began a ten Kirby adventure. Daroach appeared with his squeaks and told Kirby of the treasures about the islands and gave Kirby hints as to where they were. Travelling the four islands, Kirby rid them of the influence of Necrodeus' Skull Gang one by one, collecting treasures along the way. With the Skull Gang beaten on Pop Star, the only thing left to do was destroy their last safe hold in space, the Necro Nebula. Using the power of the rainbow medals collected in the adventure, Kirby opened the way to the nebula and defeated Necrodeus, reversing his magic and saving Pop Star from his evil schemes.
When one day trying to eat some cake and having DeDeDe actually trying to steal it this time, Kirby passed by Meta Knight just as a giant spaceship appeared and crashed. Investigating, Kirby, Meta Knight, DeDeDe and a spear-wielding Waddle Dee went to the crash site and found Magolor. The alien lamented his ruined ship, the Lor Starcutter, only to have Kirby cheer him up by offering to find the lost parts. His companions agree to help and the four traverse Dream Land to find the lost pieces and the dropped energy spheres, fighting off the strange creatures from another dimension attracted to the power of the ship. Magolor rejoices at his repaired spaceship and rewards the quartet with a trip to his home planet. There the Lor Starcutter is shot down again by the four-headed dragon Landia. Magolor explains the crown Landia wears is a dangerous artefact that must be retrieved from the monster. Successfully doing so, Magolor applauds the group and then reveals his true nature. His real goal from the start was to get his hands on the crown, an object which granted the god-like power needed to conquer the universe. As a reward for helping him, he promises he will first conquer Pop Star and creates Another Dimension with his power to travel through. The gang get on Landia, who has separated into four and realised the group were not evil but misguided. Flying off into Another Dimension, they eventually track down Magolor and kill him. Unfortunately, the Master Crown uses its power through Magolor's soul, rendering him an almighty puppet, but that too is eventually defeated. The dimension begins to fall apart, but at the last moment the Lor Starcutter appeared Now free of Magolor's control, it opens a portal to Pop Star and the Landias carry the gang home.
Between those adventures, Kirby enjoyed such fun games as playing quick draw samurai and having brick punching contests that cause massive collateral damage. He also competed in and won several pro golf competitions and entered a series of races which he came to many victories in. When the game Avalanche was popular in Dream Land, Kirby became the country's champion player.
